Newcastle United vs Arsenal Carabao Cup Semi Final 2nd Leg Preview

This week’s Carabao Cup semi-final second leg meetings begin with a clash between Newcastle and Arsenal at St James’ Park on Wednesday evening.

Newcastle hold a 2-0 advantage in this tie, winning the first leg at the Emirates at the start of January.

Arsenal come into this game off the back of a thumping 5-1 victory over champions Manchester City, keeping the Gunners firmly in the fight for the Premier League title, with Ethan Nwaneri and Miles Lewis-Skelly getting on the scoresheet.

Newcastle, meanwhile, were defeated by Fulham at home on Saturday. Josh Murphy’s goal before half-time was cancelled out by Raul Jimenez and Rodrigo Muniz. A second successive home defeat for the Magpies.

Previous Meetings

In two encounters already this season, Newcastle have had the better of Arsenal on both occasions.

Early November saw both meet at St James’ with Alexander Isak’s 12th minute goal enough to give Newcastle all three points, handing Arsenal just a second league defeat of the season.

The other was almost a month ago as Isak and Anthony Gordon netted either side of half-time to give the Magpies a 2-0 lead to defend, with a place at Wembley just 90 minutes away.

When going head-to-head, Newcastle have the advantage winning three of their last four versus Arsenal. All three wins have come at St James’ Park.

Arsenal’s last victory was in 2023, courtesy of goals from Martin Odegaard and a Fabian Schar own goal.
